The Spirit of St. Albert Society (SOSA) is excited to announce the schedule for the 2012 River Valley Picnic. This year will see the event center around the Downtown Park Area. Focus will be on:
- Lions Park
- The Park north of Lions Park across the Children?s Bridge
- The Grain Elevator Park
- Red Willow Park [at the corner of St. Albert Trail and Sturgeon Road]
We are excited that the St. Albert Scout groups have chosen to run their Annual Registration Day during the Picnic. They will once again have several demonstration activities on the go. You will find them beside the BLESS Cabin on St. Albert Trail and Sturgeon Road. Groups represented this year include 1st, 2nd, 5th, 12th & 13th St Albert Scout Groups.
The Grain Elevator Park will be open for Interpretive tours throughout the afternoon. Also on site you will find activities such as beeswax candle making and wagon rides to the north Park entrance on Mission Avenue. We are happy to be able to provide this easily accessible mode of transportation to connect the Grain Elevator Park with the rest of the activities.
In the Park area across from Lions Park, north of the Sturgeon, we are offering the Children?s Food Bank Carnival. Activities including Jumpy Castles and carnival games will be available for children of all ages. With a donation to the Food Bank, each person will receive a Play Card worth 6 opportunities to play a game. Every opportunity wins a prize; everyone goes home a winner, including the St. Albert Food Bank.
In addition, the St Albert Chamber of Commerce will be presenting a Craft Tent on the site. Food vendors Fat Franks and the Popcorn People will be on hand selling snacks for the day.
Lions Park offers a host of activities. We are happy to have TELUS on site presenting their offerings along with some special giveaways to their visitors. The Lions Club will be on hand again this year with their BBQ treats, so if you do not BYOP (Bring Your Own Picnic), visit the Lions Club to grab a bite. Kids Help Phone are back in 2012, hoping to raise much-needed funds by offering various services to the public.
Additionally at Lions Park we will be presenting a great showcase of entertainment. Back by popular demand is our Aboriginal Showcase. They will open the afternoon with a beautiful and talented display. Local talent The Leah Durelle Band with special guest Tyler Dianocky will follow with a great set of music. Martin Kerr will play his guitar, offering music that Farmers’ Market-goers will surely recognize. To close out the show, Vibe Tribe will be on hand to deliver their show Two Families.
In addition, at Lions Park the children will find a second Craft Tent where they will get to make custom pinwheels. Additional Jumpy Castles will also be on site. Star of the North and Abundant Peace Aikido and Tai Chi School will also be on site, promoting their activities in the community.
Put it all together and you have an assortment of activities that are sure to provide a great backdrop of activity for a Family Picnic in the Park.
REMEMBER: The day?s activities and events will deliver a great backdrop for the afternoon. All that we ask is that you bring a donation to the St. Albert Food Bank, as it will go a long way to helping out in the community.
